Conventional vs. Convection Ovens

If you are thinking of remodeling your kitchen, then consider the advantages of conventional vs. convection ovens. Choosing the right one boils down to how much you intend to spend on your new appliance and what you want to get out of it.

The inner workings

You may know how a conventional oven works, but the workings of a convection oven are more foreign. A convection oven moves heat upward and creates an even distribution of heat. Compared to a traditional oven that has two heating elements on the top and the bottom, a convection oven has a heating element in the back of the oven, near the center. There is also a fan that blows the heat into the oven. The heat circulates, resulting in even distribution. Having this even distribution of heat means that the oven temperature does not need to be set as high to get the same results. Some convection ovens actually convert the conventional temperature to the convection temperature. This is sometimes 40 to 50 degrees lower than a conventional oven.

The ultimate winner

Convection ovens are a better buy than a conventional oven. Because any convection oven cooks without using the convection feature, you have two ovens in one! The main disadvantage is that convection ovens are generally more expensive than conventional ovens. Additionally, they are louder because of the fan. It is less expensive to run a convection oven, and the higher initial cost is eventually offset by lower energy costs.
